These archives are more than just ink on paper; they are a chronological map of a revolution in Sri Lankan art. From early headlines capturing her “furious” energy as a painter to later reviews of her “Explosion Batiks,” this collection of press clippings traces Swanee’s journey through the eyes of her contemporaries.

Explore the decades where she was hailed as a rebel, a visionary, and ultimately becoming one of the “pioneers” who moved art from the static canvas to the fluid form of wearable fashion.

'43 Group colombo

In 1954, Swanee Jayawardene was formally invited into the inner circle of the legendary ’43 Group. As one of the few women to stand alongside titans like Harry Pieris and George Keyt, she helped define the second wave of Sri Lankan modernism.

Her entry marked a shift toward a more emotive, abstract style, proving that the group’s mission, to create art that was both contemporary and Ceylonese, was a torch she was ready to carry.

1960 venice biennale

At just 30 years old, she was selected to exhibit with the ’43 Group at the Venice Biennale. Representing Sri Lanka’s burgeoning modern identity at the world’s most prestigious art forum at such a young age was a bold declaration of her talent.

This international milestone proved that her visual language, while deeply rooted in the soul of Ceylon, possessed a maturity and resonance that reached far beyond its shores.

NATIONAL ART GALLERY EXHIBITION

The National Art Gallery Colombo, in 2012, hosted the landmark exhibition, “The Art of Swanee Jayawardene“, a final, comprehensive look at a life lived through the brush.

This retrospective offered an intimate journey through her evolution, from the fierce, thick oils of her youth to the ethereal, spiritual abstractions of her later years.

Wearable Art & the boutique

Swanee famously moved her canvas from the easel to the human body. In 1968, she founded her boutique, introducing the world to her signature “Explosion Batik.” This wasn’t mere fashion; it was a textile revolution.

Her archives document the birth of a style where traditional craft met avant-garde abstraction, forever changing how the world viewed the saree.

WORKSHOP

The workshop was where the magic became tangible. A space defined by the scent of hot wax and the vibrant splash of dyes, it was here that Swanee experimented “freely and furiously.”

Today, it stands as a symbol of her hands-on legacy, a place where technique was mastered and her unique “alchemy of color” was passed down to the next generation of her family.
